Having found the River Test in perfect fettle ahead of a grayling trip, Richie Martin knew there would be ‘no room for excuses’ if he failed to catch.

Come the end of the day, he certainly didn’t need any after landing this fish of 3lb 5oz plus another of 2lb 14oz! Richie started the day trotting corn, but after no signs, scaled down his hook size and line diameter and switched to maggots.
Fishing two on a size 18 sprayed with Betalin Plum liquid,he feed a steady flow of freebies and was into a fish on his second trot down which turned out to be the 2lb 14oz specimen. Working his way along the river, Richie landed a few trout and chub before coming to a pool that ‘had it all’, with an eddy to his right and a crease of faster flowing water. Whilst running his float along that crease, it dipped and he hooked a fish that held low, steadily heading upstream. Five minutes later, a huge grayling showed itself, and after a few more nervy moments, Richie had the huge fish of 3lb 5oz in the net.
Well done Richie!
