Top Pair At Makins

Simon Willsmore and Darren Davies are £1,750 richer after winning the last round of the Pole Fishing Pairs series with a double-section-winning performance.

Simon Willsmore (left) and Darren Davies won the final round with a perfect points score.

This excellent competition run by Pole Fishing magazine and sponsored by Preston Innovations with rounds held at Barston Lakes & Packington Fishery, Messingham Sands, Lindholme Lakes and, finally, Makins Fishery.

The final round was a nail-biter with a number of pairs in with a chance of walking away with the overall title. That honour ultimately went to John Harvey and Andy Power, who won themselves £2,000 after posting four consistent team scores over the series.

The £1,000 runners-up spot went to Simon Willsmore and Darren Davies thanks to an excellent last-round victory. Simon attacked his swim on Lake 5 with groundbait and leam and that paid off handsomely with 13.1kg of skimmers on bloodworm for a section win. Darren also won his section thanks to a late run of quality bream on Lake 4 using caster and bloodworm over joker. This gave him a 13.7kg total and 6th place overall on the day.

A special mention must go to Oliver Scotthorne (Alan Scotthorne’s son, no less), who put an amazing 26.7kg (58lb) net of bream on the scales from Peg 16B on Lake 2 for a very convincing win!
