Over the last few months, Tom Hughes has been in search of a ‘proper’ zander. After plenty of blanks a few dropped takes, he finally caught the fish he was after in the shape of this 15lb 10oz specimen.

Fishing the Great Ouse at Ten Mile Bank just before the end of season, at an area he’s heard stories of large zander, Tom cast out two roach deadbaits, one on the nearside drop off, and one on the far bank. Just 25 minutes later, he had a take on the nearside rod and lifted into a weighty fish.
After a tense ten-minute battle, in which the fish surged left and right in the current, he finally coaxed it to the surface and was blown away when he saw it. Once landed, he weighed and measured the fish, with it an impressive 84.4cm in length.
