On a recent trip to the lower Thames, Sam Taylor and his friend Adam targeted perch with lures. They had caught little of size, but when they found a large shoal of small ‘wasps’, they decided to slowly work the lures around them in the hope that there may be a few bigger ones sat off the back.

Casting along a drop off, Sam felt a sudden whack on the rod tip as his soft plastic crayfish imitation lure was taken. Despite catching a few small pike that day, Sam was confident he’d hooked his intended species, with heavy head shakes giving its identity away.
With the drag of his reel ticking, Sam eased the fish to the surface, at which point he caught a glimpse of a huge perch. At 4lb 7oz, it’s his UK PB and a fish that will take some beating, although he’ll certainly try to do so over the next few months.
Well done Sam!
