After testing these Pencil type floats for a couple of years I have just got the finished floats that are now in the shops and I must say they are a great addition to my Drennan AS range. This tray of rigs I will take on all my natural water matches as often this shape of float out fishes normal bodied type floats when fishing for Roach. They range from 0.5gram, six sizes up to 3.0gram to cover most situations.

With detachable Bristles like the SF1s and SF2s these floats are great for fishing for Roach and Skimmers on slow moving Rivers, canal and lakes. I have experienced times especially with the bigger sizes that you can hit a bigger percentage of bites especially from Roach than you can on a standard round bodied type float. I keep shotting very simple for these rigs with a bulk of shot and two number nine droppers for the 0.5g and 0.75g sizes of float and Drennan Inline Olivettes and two No 8 droppers on the bigger floats. These floats work best while targeting fish near the bottom ensue the positive shotting patterns.

When fishing rivers like the Thames and river Don in my area they are often tree lined and having a float that you can change the bristle easily and quickly is a big advantage as the light changes through the day. One tip I can offer is to make sure the bristle is shoved right to the bottom of the sealed socket to stop any water entering the socket and changing the setting on this sensitive bristle. Even with this thin float pattern the shoulder at the bristle does give you some control on slow rivers allowing the bait to be slowed down in steady flow.

These floats are also great for using in conjunction with long whips and leave the water very cleanly where a round type bodied float can create quite a splash that can scare weary Roach. Another big advantage is they sit on the line very well and are almost tangle free, plus the stream lined body follows the weight when casting with a long whip. I have used this pencil type float for many years on our local Stainforth canal at Thorne catching big weights of Roach, get out and give them a try they really do work well.
