Most anglers opt for the Method feeder approach for specimen crucian carp these days, but the float can still produce big fish, as Martyn Skoyles showed with this superb 4lb 2oz specimen.
He caught the fish from Cherry Lakes in the Cotswolds, from where he’d seen pictures of a few large crucians during a netting at the venue over winter. He and his dad headed down to the venue for a few days, with their trip coinciding with warm weather which led to a bloom of willow fluff on the lakes, making presentation on the float tricky. However, a slight change in the surface drift enabled Martyn to fish his 2.5AA crystal waggler effectively for an hour or so, with the bite coming during this period.
A soft hookable pellet fished over a minimal mini pellet and sweetcorn feed did the trick.
Well done Martyn!
