Having found the barbel fishing to be patchy on the Dorset Stour this year, local angler Mark Stocker instead turned his attention to the river’s chub, and has enjoyed a good season, capped by this recent 7lb 12oz specimen.

It was caught during a short evening session from a swim on Ringwood and District AA’s Throop section that few anglers have fished this year. It’s a weedy area, which makes presentation difficult, however Mark managed to locate a clear spot, in which he presented a trimmed-down 15mm boilie on a short hair and running leger rig. After casting onto the ‘crease’ in the flow, Mark payid out a bit of a bow in his line and fed a few broken baits along a ‘crease’. It wasn’t long before his rod tip slammed around and soon after he slipped the net under the huge chub. Mark noted it’s cod-like bugling eyes, which certainly make it a distinctive fish!
Well done Mark!
