Eight years ago, Greg Dempster started fishing at King’s Weir on the River Lea, and he’s just caught his very first barbel from the venue in the shape of this 18lb 2oz stunner.

Fishing two small pieces of luncheon meat on a size 12 hook, he had a savage bite on a recent session, with his rod almost ripped from the rest.
His strong rod bent double, and Greg knew right away that he’d hooked a substantial fish. After a hard fight, in which he steered the barbel out of several snags, he had the new PB in the net. That was his only bite of the session, but with it being such a special fish, Greg certainly didn’t mind.
Well done Greg!
