To start his pike season, Gary Mills headed to a trout lough in the south of Ireland, where he hoped to get his campaign off to a good start. He certainly did that when, on the second day of his trip whilst fishing from a boat, he hooked and landed this specimen of 34lb exactly.

Gary was fishing a large herring which he had positioned on a shallower shelf. When the fish picked up the bait, it immediately ran with it into the deeper water, and when Gary struck, he knew right away that he’d connected with a heavy fish.
It made several long runs in the dark water, but he eventually had the fish under the boat, and not long later it lay safely in the net. The fish is a personal best for Gary, and hopefully the start of a productive pike season.
Well done Gary!
