Ben Roberts, Mike Philbin and Darren Frost: the “Drennan Mickeys” – winners of the Weston Pools, Oswestry teams of three Winter League!

Ben and Darren fish for the Drennan North-West Match Team, and joined up with Mike Philbin from the fishery to compete in the five round league. They certainly got their tactics right as they won four rounds of the five!

The tactics were changed to suit from one round to the next, depending on conditions etc. For example, one strategy that worked was to fish popped up bread in conjunction with a light running lead (to create minimum disturbance) set up anything from 6 inches to 3ft off bottom. For this Ben used his “old faithful” Series 7 Carp Feeder 9ft 6in/11ft Combo rod – a great soft rod for fishing fairly light hook-lengths such as 0.148mm (4lb) Double Strength.

Another match called for the long pole with pellet and corn, and on another Ben scored with a nice net of silvers on maggot – including Ide up to 2lb.
