Andy Davies is predominantly a lure angler, targeting pike and zander, but this summer he’s focussed on the barbel of the lower Severn, with spectacular results.
His best fish so far is this superb 17lb barbel, which he backed up with others of 15lb 4oz, 14lb 1oz, and 10lb 10oz.
He’s focussed on overnight sessions, starting an hour before dark and finishing at dawn, which he’s found to be a better period for singling out the larger fish. Tactics-wise, he’s used a Vortex CKO Cocoon hookbait which he dips in a matching glug before casting out. This is fished alongside a feeder containing mixed halibut pellets which he softens slightly, a tin of anchovies which he mashes into a paste, and a few slices of seeded bread to add stodginess to the mix.
Well done Andy!
