Well known specimen angler Phil Smith recently realised his dream after netting a huge perch from a Midlands river which weighed 5lb 4oz!
Phil smashed his previous personal best by 1lb after landing this impressive perch from a Midlands river. He built up the chosen swim with a steady introduction of maggots, before twitching his lobworm hookbait slowly back through the free offerings to induce the take.
“I knew it was over 4lb when I got it into the net, but a five-pounder wasn’t even in my mind, so you can imagine how I felt when the scales read 5lb 4oz,” said Phil. “I’ve caught some big fish in my time, but this is right up there with the best.”
This fantastic capture earned Phil a weekly Drennan Cup award in Angling Times on the 10th of March.
