Last season, the River Lea produced a run of barbel catches for the history books, capped by a new British Record. Although it hasn’t hit quite the same heights yet this year, its inhabitants are certainly starting to stir, as Julian Barnes found on a recent session when he landed this 17lb 15oz barbel.
On the same day, he caught another of 16lb 7oz, plus a 29lb 11oz mirror carp!
With the change in weather and strong winds, he felt the fish would be feeding and found the Lea running high with lots of weed drifting downstream. As a result, Julian fished just one rod on a spot in the main flow, and with crayfish causing a problem, he presented a hard hooker soaked in a dip, and fed very little.

Well done Julian!
